Microsoft 365 mail template with the template.local placeholder explained

Save a working zone as a template

Turn any zone into a named template. The domain name in record content is replaced by a placeholder, so the template fits the next domain instead of pointing back at the last one.

  • One template per mail provider, hosting stack or client type
  • Templates belong to the team, so a colleague sets up a zone the way you would
  • Edit a template like a zone, in the same record table
Apply template dialog listing the team's templates

Apply it in one action

Open a zone, pick a template and its records are added in one go, pushed to the provider that hosts the zone. Records the zone already has are skipped and nothing is removed.

  • Layer a mail template onto a zone that already serves a website
  • The result lands in Time machine, ready to revert
  • Works the same at every provider you connect
Import zonefile dialog with a BIND zone file pasted in

Bring the zone file you already have

Moving away from a panel that exports BIND? Paste the file or upload it. Records DNSense cannot write, like SOA and NS, are skipped and reported instead of failing the whole import.

  • Standard BIND zone files, read as they are
  • Export a zone as a BIND file for a backup or a move
  • Imports are queued and reported back like any other change

Frequently asked questions about templates

An import skips them and tells you. Types such as SOA and NS are managed by your provider, so they are reported rather than written.

No. The original domain name is stored as a placeholder, template.local, so the same template can be applied to any zone in your portfolio.
